In 8 days last summer, the same dangerous inflammation struck 3 cardiac surgery
patients at Mary Washington Hospital within hours of their operations. On
Sept. 2, one man died. The hospital later determined that at least 11 cardiac
surgery patients were stricken during a 10-month period from the end of December
2004 to September 2005, and three died. The illnesses and deaths drew attention to
